Summary
"The world's most renowned scholar begins a passionate affair with a thoughtless, cruel, and sadistic young man..."
Li Jing has just discovered that her husband is cheating on her. Devastated by the news, she decides to take matters into her own hands: she finds a new man to sleep with. The man, however, is a handsome youth nearly twelve years her junior. His name is Arnold Grayson. And he is Li Jing’s most brilliant student.
Educated in Paris, France, at the Université Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne, Li Jing is a rare breed of Chinese intellectuals whose writings have greatly influenced Western thought. Heralded as a pioneer in the academic world, Li Jing leads a comfortable life teaching in America at the prestigious Northgate Seattle University. It is here, however, that Li Jing discovers that her husband is cheating on her, and it is here, beneath the lazy skies during summer quarter, does she meet Arnold and begin her descent into obsession and lust.
Arnold is a sadist. He is, by all accounts, also a genius. Though aware of the consequences that could occur should their relationship be discovered, Li Jing cannot rid herself of Arnold’s body. Each moment that she is with him is an excuse to indulge her senses, fulfill her body, and experience indescribable passion. And yet, it is from these very same encounters does Li Jing slowly begin to hate herself, as she understands that the passion she has with Arnold is nothing more than just physical gratification. Arnold, on the other hand, is delighted by his teacher’s miseries. To further his sadistic control over Li Jing, Arnold produces an ultimatum: either continue their sexual encounters together, or have their relationship be exposed to the world whereby Li Jing loses her career, reputation, and academic standing.
With her entire world in jeopardy, Li Jing must do all that she can to outdo Arnold at his own twisted game. However, while Li Jing swears vengeance against Arnold for attempting to control her life, it is her actions—as well as her intelligence, dignity, and pride as a woman—that may very well prove to be her ultimate downfall.
